Bubble caps are one of the devices in large-diameter fractional distillation columns that are designed to produce a bubbling action to exchange the vapor bubbles flowing up the column. A bubble cap tray has a riser fitted over each hole, and a cap that covers the riser. The cap is mounted so that there is a space between riser and cap to allow the passage of vapor. These are used in the process of fractional distillation usually in 3“ and 4“ sizes where the liquid loads are low and a very high turndown ratio is expected. These trays have the widest operating range due to leak tight design. A variety of designs can be customized in these trays as per requirements of the customer.
